A Digital Standard for Post-Mining Europe

PALADIN addresses the urgent need for a harmonized digital framework to support the sustainable transition of European post-mining regions. These areas face complex environmental, geotechnical, and socio-economic challenges, lacking interoperable tools for risk management, land-use planning, and stakeholder coordination.

The project will deliver the first universal Postmining Information Modelling Standard (PIMS), leveraging BIM principles to create structured, semantically rich digital representations of post-mining landscapes - validated across Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, and Spain.

PALADIN's outcomes are aligned with the European Green Deal and Just Transition Mechanism, supporting climate adaptation, risk reduction, and digital transformation in coal regions.

Six interconnected research objectives form the backbone of the PALADIN programme, spanning from foundational modelling standards through to policy implementation.

Establishing PIM as a structured BIM-based representation of coal post-mining sites to enable safe planning and reuse.
